It has been reported in Le Figaro (24/06/08) that in order to reduce a deficit of nearly 3 billion euro, the director of CNAMTS (Caisse nationale de l'assurance maladie des travailleurs salariés), Frédéric Van Roekeghem, will be forwarding a proposal to Éric Woerth, the Minister of Budget and Public Accounts, that will suggest a restructure of the way the French health system looks at the support of ‘affections de longue durée’ (ALD), or long term illnesses..
It is estimated that roughly 8 million people in France currently benefit from the 100% assistance provided by the ALD mechanism. However, under these new proposals, this might radically change the way any new applications are supported. It is proposed to reduce the assistance from 100% to around 35%, leaving a shortfall of 65% to be borne by Mutuelle funds and insurance. Perhaps, this can be seen as part of an ongoing reorganization to reduce the large deficit in the French health system that we have already witnessed with the adoption and ratification of legislation last year, regarding the French Health system and non French nationals.
