The “EHIC Holiday Top-Up Plan” is designed for those who wish to spend anywhere from 7 to 360 days in France.
It is designed to ‘top up’ the cover provided by the “European Health Insurance Card” (EHIC).

Holiday Home Insurance Do I need an EHIC to take out the plan?
Yes. It is mandatory to be in possession of a current EHIC before this plan can be taken out. Remember, each individual on the policy must have an EHIC.

Holiday Top Up vs Travel InsuranceWhat if I do not know how long I will be staying in France?

It allows for frequent visits to France.  You return to France as many times as you want during the period specified on the policy. If you have to return to the U.K. for a period and then go back out to France, then this is permitted, providing it is within the period specified on the policy.

What about travel insurance? Do I still need it?
Yes. The plan is not a travel insurance plan.  It is a purely medical insurance policy to compliment cover provided by the EHIC. We strongly suggest that you take out travel insurance as well.

How much does it cost?

The plan is priced on the number of days required and the age of the person to be insured. As there is no upper age limit applied to the plan, your only concern is the length of stay.

If you are travelling for less than a week, you will need to take out alternative insurance prior to travelling (click here ), however if your trip is between 7 and 360 days, this s the ideal plan for you.

EHIC Holiday Top Up Plan What if I rely solely on the EHIC?
Then you will be responsible for those costs not covered under the EHIC.  The card gives access to state-provided medical treatment only, and you'll be treated on the same basis as an 'insured' person living in the country you're visiting.

Remember, this might not cover all the things you'd expect to get free of charge from the NHS in the UK. You will generally have to make a contribution to the cost of your care as the EHIC currently covers in the region of 65% to 70% of the cost of treatment in France.

What if I have a pre-existing condition? What if I am over 75?

□    No medical questions
□    No exclusions for pre-existing medical conditions
□    No age limit for joining the plan
□    No policy excesses
□    No loadings
□    All documentation is in English

Procedure for claiming under your “Exclusive Healthcare EHIC Holiday Top Up policy”.

a. Every time you require treatment or drugs you must present your EHIC at the outset of the
Consultation etc and ask for a receipted bill, a “feuille de soins”, for what you have paid.

b. The receipted bills must be completed and signed by you and given to the CPAM office
local to where you are staying. The address will be in a local telephone book. CPAM will reimburse you and send you a statement showing dates, costs and the amount paid to you.

c. Post the CPAM statements to Exclusive’s EHIC claims office for reimbursement of the unpaid balance according to the terms of your EHIC policy of insurance.

The address is:

d. Please note that the settlement process can take up to three months by post to the UK.

e. But, if you have a holiday home in France ask CPAM to register your EHIC along with your address and your French bank’s RIB for much faster settlement directly to you bank and CPAM statements by post to your French address.

f. In most instances the above procedures are standard but there are exceptions and
variations as shown below:

Doctors – Standard. Ask if they are Conventionné. The charge should be €22.

Registered State Nurses. These are normally prescribed by a doctor or hospital. Attach a copy of the prescription to the bill before sending it to CPAM.

Dentists – standard. We would suggest that you always ask for the cost beforehand.

Laboratories xray and scan centres. Doctor’s prescription required, otherwise
standard but attach a copy of the prescription to the bill before sending it to CPAM. Specialists Doctor’s prescription required, otherwise standard but attach a copy of the prescription to the bill before sending it to CPAM.

Pharmacies (chemists)

Doctor’s prescription required for approved drugs. Present your EHIC together with the doctor’s bill and the prescription to the pharmacy which will dispense the items. Some will be reimbursable by CPAM at 35%, some at 65% and there may be items NR. Neither CPAM nor Exclusive Healthcare can reimburse the charge for NR items and the pharmacist should point this out to you.

Do not forget to remove the little peel off labels on the medicine boxes and stick them on the appropriate places against the items entered on the back of the doctor’s bill before completing it and sending it to CPAM together the duplicate copy of the prescription. Unless you do this CPAM will not reimburse you and Exclusive's claims office will be unable to either.

Hospital treatment

You can be admitted on the recommendation of a doctor who may have sent you to a specialist first. If you are to under go an operation you may be given an appointment with the anaesthetist that will attend at the operation who will want to find out if you have allergies or some condition that requires consideration in selecting the right anaesthetic for you. You will normally have to pay and follow the standard procedure.

During the preadmission period please contact our EHIC Claims office, at the address above, and give them: Your Policy number, your name, your age, the date of admission, the name, address and fax number of the of the Hospital. The hospital should have made arrangements with CPAM for direct payment of the State’s share of your bill and we will issue a guarantee to pay your share according to your Policy Terms and Conditions. We would always suggest that you acquire the hospital’s fax number, so we can issue a payment guarantee.

If you are in France always send any correspondence by receipt of delivery post – letter recommandée avec accuse de reception – which can be obtain at any La Poste.

I was a little sceptical of the plan as it seemed too good to be true; covering all my existing ailments for such a low premium. However, I was unfortunate enough to be taken ill while staying at our holiday home in Brittany. The service was first rate and I would never consider travelling there again without cover – as I had done before.

Thank you very much for the peace of mind this little policy brings…

Mr F

My mother is 85 and for our extended stay in France we wanted the reassurance of health insurance for her. After much research we decided the EHIC Top-up Plan seemed most suitable as it was easy to apply for and there was no need to fill in complicated forms concerning pre-existing conditions.  As she has some on-going health issues we knew we would be making some claims for regular tests and monitoring. When I first received the policy and description of claims procedure I must admit I wondered if claiming was going to be a chore, particularly the requirement to have the doctor fill in the claim form. What I found was that, after this was done for the first visit to the doctor, subsequent visits and tests were covered by the original form, so a short note explaining this with each claim sufficed.  Those who administer the claims procedure processed the claims quickly and efficiently, and the reimbursements were paid directly into my mother's French bank account.

Mr L

My wife was recently diagnosed with cancer, we had investigated a number of holiday options, but found getting insurance at any sensible price impossible. When we spoke to Essential Health, we were so relieved to know it would be fully covered – even without an excess. This enables us to have a wonderful break and enjoy life to the full.. thank you.
